Rain and muddy track conditions loomed over the famed Run for the Roses, yet a field of determined three-year-olds packed into the starting gate, ready to battle. The bay colt Sovereignty—trained by Bill Mott and ridden by Venezuelan jockey Junior Alvarado—broke from post 18 and patiently navigated through traffic early. The heavy favorite, Journalism, rated well and was well-positioned as they tipped into the stretch. As the turn tightened and the footing tested them, Sovereignty unleashed a decisive turn of foot, collaring Journalism down the final furlong and edging clear to win in 2:02.31. Journalism finished a solid second, while Baeza secured a respectable third. The victory marked Mott’s second Derby win and delivered a long-awaited classic triumph for the global powerhouse Godolphin. Despite the sloppy surface, the crowd of over 147,000 experienced a memorable edition of the mile-and-a-quarter test of stamina and speed.
